Have you ever looked up at the building where D’Olier Street and Westmoreland Street meet at O’Connell Bridge? You probably have, as it’s one of Dublin’s architectural gems. What you may not have noticed is the stone-carved sign for John Purcell – tobacco importer & cigarette specialist, est. 1880.
Recently, Antonia Hart and I met Fionn Davenport and Regan Hutchins from Inside Culture, RTÉ Radio 1’s newest arts show which focuses on a variety of things from crafts to cultural agendas as well known artists, cultural topics and the history of ideas.
We started our walk-through at Purcell’s on O’Connell Bridge and from there, moved across to O’Connell Street. The coloured markers on the map below show the ghost signs we discuss on the show. The little red markers are other #DublinGhostSigns in the O’Connell Street area, to give you an idea of how much history is above us as we walk around our city.
Listen to the piece on Dublin’s ghost signs on soundcloud below (begins around 21m30s).
Inside Culture broadcasts every Monday at 22.00 on RTÉ Radio 1.
